Council has so far planted 526 trees in the city and is targeting to plant 700 in its greening programme.
Council has so far planted 526 trees in the city and is targeting to plant 700 in its greening programme. Working with partners Friends of the Environment and Nyaradzo Funeral Services, the City yesterday planted more trees at Warren Hills Cemetery. “We are not only planting but we manage and grow the trees. We have also planted at Pioneer Cemetery, today we planted here at Warren Hills and our next port of call is Mabvuku Cemetery. “We are not only planting exotic trees but we are also balancing with fruit trees. As a City we are aiming to provide shade at our cemeteries, fruits and shelter for small wild animals and greening and beautifying the City, said the Chief Parks and Cemeteries Officer, Mr Godfrey Munetsi. Friends of the Environment representative Ms Patience Musire said, “Once we plant the trees it will be easier for people to easily access and maintain the graves of their loved ones.” Nyaradzo Group General Manager, Sydney Chakuchichi said the green city initiative is an attempt to restore ecosystems, minimise environmental degradation and conserve natural resources. “Since cemeteries are sacred places, once reclaimed with trees, we limit chances of human interference and consequently create an intact forest. The created forest aids in the conservation of natural resources, reduction of carbon emissions, protection of worker health and the preservation of animal habitat.”
