The refurbishment of Rufaro Stadium is going according to plan with various works on schedule as the City moves to make the stadia a world class sporting facility. A recent visit to the ceremonial home of Zimbabwean football by this publication shows that works are moving in the right direction with some works already in the final stages of completion. The changing rooms are being expanded for both referees and teams. The lighting system is being worked on with all wirings being replaced by the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority. Plans are afoot to install solar lights which will bring back night football to the capital. The turf is being levelled and water sprinklers installed to make sure that the pitch is well watered. The small street shops along Remembrance Drive are almost complete with most being on roof level. The shops and the car park will make sure the stadium becomes a business hub, creating other revenue streams for the city. The perimeter wall is also almost complete and gravel is now in place for outside car parks. Harare Mayor Cllr Jacob Mafume said the city is looking forward to host the Premier Soccer League at the Stadium. “The pitch has been laid, what is left is the automatic irrigation which is going to be completed this week” he said. “As a city we are trying to meet the PSL standards. The parking space is being given a major facelift to ensure that vehicles are safe and there is adequate parking. It will be a multipurpose stadium, there will be a shopping complex, parking lot and B-arena which will generate funds for the maintenance of the stadium,” he said. The B-arena will mostly be used as a training ground and will have its own boundary, shopping malls and its own in and out access.
