Acting Mayor Cllr Musarurwa Mutizwa has bemoaned the state of the city’s roads saying Council was doing all in its power to ensure that the roads are trafficable. Speaking after a tour of some of the city’s roads with Local Government and Public Works Deputy Minister Marian Chombo and other senior council and Government officials, Acting Mayor Mutizwa said Council was targeting to work on 10 roads (31,4 km). “We are expecting the following funds for the roads programme, Zinara: ZWL$958, 944,703.67 of which 25 percent (ZWL$240 million) will go towards routine maintenance and the balance will go towards road rehabilitation (reconstruction and reseal),” he said. “Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfer: ZWL$150 million. The total amount dedicated towards the Roads programme is ZWL$1,2 billion. The tour has reaffirmed the need to look holistically at the state of the roads. For those that are being worked on, lets ensure that we maintain high quality standards so that we get value for money for our investment,” he said. He added that while major roads are being taken care there is need to look at the feeder roads and arterial roads which are also in dire need of rehabilitation. Acting Mayor Mutizwa said the potholed roads are an increasing hazard for drivers especially dangerous now due to the heavy rains currently being experienced.
