Acting Chamber Secretary Mr Warren Chiwawa is fine tuning operations of the municipal enforcement unit to make it more visible and responsive to the needs of residents. The unit was established to ensure city bylaws are observed and to guarantee security in the municipal area. Speaking to Sunshine News, Mr Chiwawa said all enforcement details will be identifiable through their uniforms. “We want the public to draw confidence in the force. They should clearly see them and derive confidence that they have protection. Uniforms for all details have been secured,” he said. There have been run ins with bogus and impostors who took advantage of the fact that “our officers were not wearing uniforms. That is now going to a situation of the past”. Mr Chiwawa said the public is justified to raise issues when the municipal officers act in a manner not consistent with their role. “We are encouraging the public not to pay bribes or to induce our officers with incentives,” he said. Council is receiving complaints of officers demanding bribes from vendors and motorists. “Report such officers so that measures can be taken to curb the vice” he said. His comments follow concerns from the Human Resources Committee that recently recommended that all officers should wear uniforms and be clearly identifiable to the public.
