The water supply infrastructure maintenance works carried out last weekend were meant to stop leakages in the Central Business District (CBD), City Principal Engineer Victor Shana has said. Several areas were without water during the time and these include Tynwald, Warren Park, Mabelreign, Milton Park, Marlborough, Westgate, Bluffhill, the CBD only to mention a few. “Even hospitals like Wilkins and Parirenyatwa were affected,” said Eng Shana. He said for the work to be successful we they had to close one lane leading to the northern suburbs, meaning these suburbs were affected. “This was an urgent work so we could not proceed pumping water flow hence we had to quickly apply for water shutdown. He said the work needed at least 24 hours with the first 12 hours for emptying the pipes. “We had to de-water the pipes as they had water, and the last 12 hours were to do all the maintenance works” he said. He said pumping water started soon after the completion of the maintenance works. “However, not all areas get water immediately after the pipe resumes pumping. “There is need for time to fill up the water pipes then build pressure for water to reach the residential areas again. “By 12 midnight almost all areas scheduled to receive water were already at the receiving end,” he said.
