Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume says Harare City council is committed to fighting corruption as it benefits a few individuals at the expense of residents. Mayor Mafume said those involved in corrupt activities have been brought to book.
Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume says Harare City council is committed to fighting corruption as it benefits a few individuals at the expense of residents. Mayor Mafume said those involved in corrupt activities have been brought to book. “I have made sure that the culprits are exposed," he said. Mayor Mafume said Harare City Council had exposed culprits involved in Rufaro Marketing scandal in a bid to fight corruption. He added that Harare City Council has since elected a new board for Rufaro Marketing Private Limited, to ensure transparency. Mayor Mafume said Council’s aim is to transform Rufaro Marketing Private Limited into an institution that benefits Harare residents in the funding of social services. He said Council has moved from a city that breeds corruption to a city that fights corruption. "I adopted a zero tolerance against this vice which benefits a few individuals while, the majority suffers," he said. He said a corrupt free Council will help win the hearts of investors and rate payers. Mayor Mafume said Harare City Council has witnessed the sprouting of illegal settlements and land barons, which has led to the adoption of the Human Settlement Policy. Mafume said the policy seeks to address outstanding issues in the pay schemes that operate in Harare. He said Council will not allocate unserviced land as this breeds illegal settlements. Mayor Mafume said Harare City Council will use money from its Estates Account to capacitate works department and buy the necessary equipment to service land.
