Council has recorded a significant increase in revenue collected from the informal sector during the first quarter of 2023 with the City set to invest more in the sector. According to the recent Council minutes, Acting Housing and Community Services director Mr Sibusiso Sithole reported that an 80 percent increase in revenue from the informal sector was recorded in ZWL and 17 percent in USD. He said the major contributing districts of the revenue were Mbare, Highfield and Mbare Hostels. “A total of ZW$ 154 692 976 and US$ 277 619 were collected by Council. “Mr Sithole noted that approval of the 2023 Budget had seen the informal sector tariff fees for 2023 being reduced, which led to the increase in revenue,” read the minutes. He said council is implementing a raft of measures to promote a favourable working environment for the informal sector. He said this include among other measures payment plans for vendors in arrears around the city, constant monitoring of weekly revenue inflows, identification of more vending sites, continuation of ongoing infrastructure projects to accommodate more traders and awareness campaigns. He said the City fathers had initiated favourable policies as Small to Medium Enterprises played a pivotal role in economic development.
