The City of Harare has joined the anti-drug campaign with Mayor Cllr Jacob Mafume calling on youths to desist from using drugs and staying away from crime.
The City of Harare has joined the anti-drug campaign with Mayor Cllr Jacob Mafume calling on youths to desist from using drugs and staying away from crime. In a speech read on his behalf by Ward 30 Councillor Charles Chidhagu at the belated National Youth Day commemorations held at Glen View High 1 School, Cllr Mafume urged youths to focus on improving their lives that destroying themselves. He said industrialisation and urbanisation are double-edged swords to the youth as it can either built or destroy a life and the youths needs to be told about the dangerous habit of drug misuse. "It is high time we tell the youth about the dangerous habit of drug misuse and crime among others as they can destroy the bright future ahead. "We are in the time and age where industrialisation and urbanisation are double-edged swords which can either built or destroy a life," Clr Mafume said. He said youths are being affected by individualism, lack of family affection, peer pressure and in the long run they find themselves in a habit of drinking, smoking and drug addiction which will affect not only their body but mind and future also. "Individualism, lack of family affection, peer pressure among others which in the long run the youths find themselves in a habit of drinking, smoking and drug addiction which had completely shattered the bright future of our children. “Not only the youth but other person as well should understand that the habit of drugs and substance abuse not only affect their body but mind and destroying their future also", he added. Speaking during the same ceremony Harare Junior Mayor, Atupele Phiri added that youths needs to change their mentality in order to fight drug abuse. He said the Harare junior council is planning to start a 10 day activism campaign against drug abuse which will create a platform where youths can showcase their talents since they are tired of listening to speeches and same words that drug are wrong.
