Council is negotiating with two companies that want to partner the city in developing, maintaining and operating solar power plants.
Council is negotiating with two companies that want to partner the city in developing, maintaining and operating solar power plants. One of the company’s, Lateral Insight Ventures proposed to set up a plant that will supply power to City of Harare’s Firle and Crowborough waste water plants, proposed City of Harare Electric Vehicle Charging network and Lateral Insights Regional Data Centre. Lateral Insight Ventures managing director, Mr Nhena Nyagura told the Joint Business, Environmental Management and Finance Development Committee that the plant would preserve and enhance the existing animal husbandry function at Council farms. Part of the company’s proposal was to produce 500mw in phases of 50mw, City of Harare’s Waste Water peak power usage of 30 mw, Regional Data Centre (10mw) - Develop Electronic Vehicle (EV) charging net work stations across Harare (5mw) and - Harare – Norton – Gweru Commuter Train Rehabilitation (+10mw Peak). Solgas Energy (Pvt) Ltd also proposed a Joint Venture with City of Harare on a Solar project. The Solgas (Pvt) Ltd representative told the joint committee that alongside its partner banks had unlocked the needed investment in solar power and energy storage solutions which would target City of Harare’s District Offices for revenue assurance purposes. The proposal of the company is centered on a three step processes- (i) City of Harare: to partner City of Harare with Solgas in solar power and energy storage solutions, (ii) Local Partner banks:- to grant fixed term loan facilities to City of Harare for solar hybrid systems, and (iii) Solgas : to partner City of Harare for all their power needs. The Committee expressed the need to undertake tours of inspection of the two company’s current projects to enable the Committee to assess the companies capacity to undertake the projects in the proposed Joint Ventures.
