City Of Harare | Council embarks on traffic lights installation project

Council has embarked on a programme to install traffic lights on several intersections in the city in a bid to minimize the occurrence of accidents and excessive traffic congestion within the Central Business District. Traffic Signals Section, acting Superintendent, Mr Noel Mwendamberi said the exercise involves installing new traffic lights around the city and also repairing malfunctioning ones. ”Our task is to install ten new traffic lights every year to enhance safety for the rate payers and ensure that the roads are trafficable ensuring smooth flow of traffic”, said Mr Mwendamberi. Some of these installations and commissioning along intersections have been completed at the intersection of First Street and Nelson Mandela and Corner E.D Mnangagwa Road and Ridgeway South where there were no traffic lights and accidents had become rampant. “At Corner E.D Mnangagwa Road and Ridgeway South there were no traffic lights and a lot of accidents were recorded .It was taking hours to cross the intersection and the number of accidents recorded had become disturbing”, said Mr Mwendamberi. The traffic lights are backed up by batteries.
