His Worship the Mayor Cllr Jacob Mafume today joined the Minister of Local Government and Public Works Hon Daniel Garwe to continue with the Chenesa Harare Clean-up Operation they launched on Wednesday. "We want a clean, Smart City and we are clear that we should restore Harare to what it used to be, if not even better," Mayor Mafume said. He emphasised that vendors who want to operate in the CBD should relocate to designated places while those who choose to work in the suburbs will also have access to designated places there. Mayor Mafume reassured vendors living with disabilities that the City will continue to exempt them from the clean-up and decongestion operation provided they conduct their reserved trade in airtime vending at areas that are clean and hygienic. He declared that the days of lawlessness and "free-for-all" vending are over, vowing to ensure that there will be no return to the old regime of illegal vending, congestion and litering. In a bold step welcomed by the majority of citizens, the City of Harare has activated the Chenesa Harare Clean-up Campaign fully supported by the Government of Zimbabwe. At least 300 newly trained municipal police officers are expected to work in shifts, safeguarding the gains of the clean-up operation through round-the-clock enforcement.
