The graduation of 49 students from Harare's School of Excellence will bring solutions to many challenges currently bedeviling the City as the programmes leant were related to Council work, Mayor Cllr Jacob Mafume has said.
Speaking during the graduation ceremony, Cllr Mafume said the City is facing complex challenges that need academic answers.
"We face challenges in waste management, transport, roads, congestion, health, education, entertainment, sport and recreation.
"Harare is facing commercial growth and we need to research," said Cllr Mafume.
He said the School of Excellence is that light one sees at the end of the tunnel because now the city can research on various challenges.
"Just recently we had Covid-19 as a huge challenge for the city.
"Cities in and around the country are facing cholera and infectious diseases so the design of our facilities need to cater for all this," he said.
He said he is hoping that the new degree programmes are going to cater for everyone in order to improve on better service delivery.
He said the upcoming elections are going to bring councilors from different academic backgrounds and it is now Council's duty to work on the gap between educated and uneducated councilors.
"So we need to bridge the gap from zero to professionals so that residents can get the benefit of service," said Mafume
He said solutions are needed for the challenges that council is facing, and good academics are needed to provide with strategic solutions.
"We need academia to step in these arguments so that they can provide neutral, objective and in a more scientific manner in providing solutions to questions of the day," said Mafume.
