The City of Harare has embarked on catch them young programmes in schools aimed at instilling a sense of responsibility towards the environment in children.
This week the programme was held at Sunningdale 1 primary school.
The catch them young programme which began in 2014 has been yielding positive impact as the City of Harare is instilling a sense of cleanliness, water conservation and proper waste management in the young minds.
Catch them young programmes had been stopped due to Covid 19.
Addressing the school pupils, the City’s Acting Principal Communications Officer Ms Mercy Makuwatsine and Waste Management Superintendent Trish Mkudu gave the children key lessons on disposal of litter for instance putting perishables in a compost.
She urged the pupils to use bins because littering is a punishable offense under the council by-laws.
“Go tell your parents and guardians that it is illegal to dump rubbish at illegal dumpsites.
“It is a punishable offense under the council by-laws. Let us separate litter at home. All perishable litter to be disposed in a compost. Diapers should be wrapped in plastic bags and dispose them in bins because they are harmful to the environment,” said Ms Makuwatsine.
The stakeholder engagement programme aims at tackling the issue of waste challenges that are on the rise within the city and it is in line #operation chenesa Harare.
The mantra of the programme is, “musarasa marara pese pese
“Munorasa marara mumabin”
