The Harare Metropolitan Police division falls under the Town Clerk's department and is headed by a Chief Security Officer. Its Head Quarter is in the Workington Industrial area off Bishop Gaul. The division has three sections which are headed by Chief Superintendents namely;

Protective Security which is responsible for the Central Region, Dogs Section and Regions 1 - 4.

Special Services which is responsible for the Environmental Patrol Unit, Mbare and Regions 1 - 4, Central Business District (CBD) and VIP protection, Investigations and the Metropolitan Reaction Group.

Management Services (Administration and Training) which is responsible for Administration and Personnel, Cash-In-Transit, Transport and Communication, Quarter Master and Training.

Each of the above sections is further amenable to the following; Human and Material Resources Correction or Correlation, Mobility and Performance Management, Information Storage and Computerisation, Radio Communication and Security Effectiveness and Financial Projections.

The Harare Metropolitan Police (HMP) will be there to provide, improve, maintain and facilitate quality Municipal security services in an effective and efficient manner.

Functions of The Division

The HMP is mandated with major tasks of protecting Council property (static guard duties) which includes Key Points; investigation of thefts, loss, damage and misuse of council property and labour, protection of cash-in-transit, enforce both Environmental and Traffic by-laws. Maintain peace and orderliness of the City by ensuring that there are no illegal vendors, vagrants, street kids, squatters, touts, control of minibuses, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and any other duties needing the Police assistance in co-operation with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
