Harare Mayor Councillor Herbert Gomba has hailed the cordial relations that exist between Government and his council saying it was yielding great results.
"Our engagement with government is now bearing fruit as evidenced by the write off of ZIMRA interest and penalties to the tune of ZWL$135,1million dollars. We remain obligated to paying the principal debt of ZWL$32 million which we commit to settle through a sustainable payment plan."
"We continue to lobby government to allocate more resources under the inter-governmental fiscal transfers, as stipulated in the Constitution to enable us to deliver services to the residents of Harare,” he said.
He assured residents of improved service delivery with the aid of Government.
"We also have obligations with ZESA where we owe them ZWL$141million dollars and they owe us ZWL$125million dollars. We are negotiating a set-off, but in the meantime we pay ZWL$1 million dollars per month.”
"The City of Harare appreciates the economic challenges our residents are facing hence we have tried to ensure that our rates and tarrifs remain sub-economic. We have however explored other revenue generation streams, which we hope to implement next year."
