The Minister of Local Government Public Works and National Housing Hon July Moyo led an inter-ministerial task force set up by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to sanitize Harare South on a familiarization tour of the area.
Land barons illegally parceled out stands to home-seekers without council’s authority creating chaos through double allocations and giving land on areas meant for other purposes like schools and clinics.
The task force was setup following this month’s cleanup exercise which was attended by the President in the area.
Speaking after touring Harare South, Minister Moyo said the committee was familiarizing itself with the situation on the ground so it can come up with recommendations.
“Today we were doing a scanning exercise so that we appreciate as a committee of Cabinet together with the Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Province, the Mayor of Harare, and the Town Clerk. Next week we will start sitting down and see how much resources we can get so that we start work immediately as the President has directed,” said Minister Moyo.
The Minister also warned home seekers to be wary of land barons who are taking advantage of home seekers.
“No one should sell land in Harare South and people should not continue to build until we re-assess and see what we ought to be doing. We have warned land barons against conning people and now we are moving in to restore sanity.” said Hon July Moyo.
The tour was also attended by the Minister of Defence and War Veterans Oppah Muchinguri, Minister of Information Communication Technology and Courier Services, Kazembe Kazembe, Member of Parliament for Harare South Constituency, Tongai Mnangagwa and Ward 1 Councillor Tendai Katsaria.
