Harare City Council has engaged a number of contractors to clear garbage dumps in a move that will bring joy to many residents.
Clearance starts Monday.
Council has been failing to collect litter on time because of equipment breakdown and the unavailability of foreign currency to bring in 15 refuse trucks acquired by the city from South Africa.
Residents have also been contributing through wanton disposal of litter and failure to separate at source.
Environment Management Committee chairperson councillor Kudzai Kadzombe said council hopes that when the dumps are cleared it would have fixed some of its refuse compactors which are broken down.
“We hope that once we finish the exercise we will be able to collect refuse effectively so that the dumps will not pile up again,” she said.
“Residents should also play their part by adopting new ways of waste disposal. We are encouraging separation of waste at source and composting at household level.
A lot of people who have embraced the value of litter are making money through selling garbageand recycling.
